There’s a special kind of magic in capturing the first moments of a new life, and baby Mary Josephine’s newborn session was overflowing with it.
Welcoming her into my Wesley Chapel studio were her loving parents, Mary Cait and Mike, and her two enthusiastic big brothers, Murray (3 ½) and Callan (2). It was clear from the start that this little girl was entering a world filled with love and excitement. As a newborn photographer, it is always heartwarming to see such family bonds.
Knowing a little about the boys’ personalities beforehand helped me tailor the session to their energetic spirits. Mom, Mary Cait, had described Murray as initially shy but quick to warm up, with a passion for monster trucks, sharks, and Disney movies like Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and Inside Out. Callan, our “sour patch,” as Mom affectionately called him, was described as outgoing (on most days!) and eager to follow his brother’s lead while simultaneously stealing the show. His loves include Moana and Frozen, adding another layer of playful energy to the mix. Having this information is invaluable for a newborn photographer to effectively manage the session.
Mary Cait’s own style, a “neutral girly” aesthetic with a preference for muted blues and greens (and a willingness to embrace subtle pinks for the occasion), guided the color palette for the session.
I focused on using tons of neutral colors in my setups, incorporating small pops of blue for baby Mary Josephine to tie everything together.
As a newborn photographer, aligning with the parents’ style ensures a cohesive and beautiful outcome.
Understanding the dynamics of photographing young children, especially with the age gap between the brothers, I prioritized capturing candid, interactive moments. The goal was to showcase the genuine connection between the siblings and the overwhelming love they already had for their new baby sister. We focused on poses that allowed the boys to naturally interact with Mary Josephine – gentle touches, loving gazes, and sweet whispers. These unscripted moments, full of genuine emotion, are always the most precious for a newborn photographer.
While the focus was on candid interactions, we also captured a few posed shots, just in case!
It can be challenging to get everyone on the same page with young children, but the aim was to create a relaxed and happy atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable and natural. The resulting images perfectly capture the joy and excitement of this new chapter for the family. As a newborn photographer, seeing baby Mary Josephine so loved and cherished was a rewarding experience. Baby Mary Josephine is so lucky to have such loving parents and doting big brothers.
